7 Years of Firefly Spa: Karen’s Journey in Mission Hills

This September, Firefly Spa celebrates 7 years of wellness and community in Mission Hills. For owner Karen, this milestone is a reflection of how far the spa has come, from one treatment room to a thriving team and now an exciting expansion upstairs.

From One Room to a Thriving Spa

Before opening Firefly Spa, Karen worked for years on her own, often fully booked and at capacity. “I felt it was time to pivot,” she shares. “I wanted to collaborate with other practitioners and create a space where we could care for more clients than I could alone.”

That decision laid the foundation for Firefly, which today has grown to a staff of 20 serving more than 150 clients each week.

Overcoming Challenges

Building a team and navigating growth have brought challenges along the way. “Hiring people who truly fit the culture has been one of the most important lessons,” Karen explains. “Skills can be taught, but personality and values are what make a strong team.”

Another defining chapter was Firefly’s resilience through the pandemic. “We were only in our second year and still figuring things out. Making it through that time and coming out stronger is something I am very proud of.”

What Expansion Means

The spa’s newest milestone is its upstairs expansion, which adds treatment rooms, a lounge area, and space for couples massages, gatherings, and events. “If you told me 7 years ago that we would be taking over another suite, I would not have believed it,” Karen says. “Now, when all four treatment rooms are full, I feel so proud of how far we’ve come. I can’t wait to feel that same excitement once the new space is bustling with clients too.”

Staying Personal While Growing

Even as Firefly grows, Karen ensures the spa retains its small business feel. “We’re not a franchise, and clients feel that difference when they walk in,” she explains. “Because I’ve worked in the treatment room myself, I understand both sides of the client experience. That perspective helps us stay grounded and personal, while our systems make things simple and seamless.”

Looking Ahead with Gratitude

Karen credits her team and the Firefly community for making 7 years possible. “In the beginning, I was doing almost everything myself. Now, I rely on a team that collaborates and supports one another, and that’s a huge part of our success.”

Above all, she feels thankful. “I’m grateful for our clients and community who have supported us through the years and allowed us to be part of their wellness journey.”
