Your First Microneedling Appointment at Firefly Spa in San Diego
Microneedling can feel intimidating if you have never tried it before. Booking your first microneedling appointment at Firefly Spa should feel exciting, not daunting.
This guide walks you through every step, from preparation to aftercare, so you know what to expect at our Mission Hills, San Diego spa.
What to Expect During Your First Microneedling Appointment at Firefly Spa
Microneedling uses tiny, controlled needles to create micro-channels in the skin.
This stimulates collagen, improves texture, and boosts radiance over time.
At Firefly Spa, we focus on comfort, safety, and clear communication during every step of your visit!
Pain & Comfort
Before treatment, we apply a 10% lidocaine topical numbing cream for about 30 minutes.
Bring a book, a crossword puzzle or whatever you like to do to relax!
The lidocaine significantly reduces discomfort during the procedure.
During the session, most clients feel light pressure or a mild scratching sensation rather than sharp pain.
You can talk to your practitioner at any time if you feel sensitive in certain areas.
Our goal is to keep you comfortable while still delivering effective results.
Before Your Appointment
To get the best outcome from your first microneedling appointment at Firefly Spa, follow these guidelines:
- Arrive with clean skin and no makeup.
- Stay hydrated and avoid sun exposure if possible.
- Avoid retinoids, exfoliants, and acids for 48 hours.
- Facial Botox must not have been done within the last 7 days.
- Moderate facial peels must not have been done within the last 14 days.
- Facial fillers must not have been done within the last 28 days.
- IPL, laser, or Fraxel treatments must not have been done within the last 28 days.
- Deep facial peels must not have been done within the last 28 days.
Appointment Length
Your visit typically lasts 60–90 minutes, including numbing time.
The microneedling portion itself usually takes 20–30 minutes, depending on the areas treated and your skin’s needs.
Aftercare & Healing Timeline
Microneedling is a controlled treatment, but your skin still needs gentle care afterward.
Understanding the healing timeline helps you plan around social events, workouts, and sun exposure.
Redness
Redness typically lasts 24–72 hours.
It is normal to look like you have a sunburn immediately after treatment.
The redness will fade throughout the day.
Many clients find that by the 24-hour mark, their skin is no longer noticeably red.
For some skin types, redness can last up to 72 hours.
Mild tightness, roughness, or dryness during healing is also normal.
Patient aftercare guidelines:
- Avoid makeup, sun exposure, and strenuous activity for the next 24–48 hours.
- Use Firefly’s post-care kit daily (gentle facial wash, moisturizer, sunscreen).
- Avoid direct sun exposure; apply SPF 30+ daily and wear sun protection.
- Avoid harsh exfoliants or active ingredients (retinoids, acids) for at least 5 days post-treatment.
- Hydrate well to support skin recovery.
Cleansers, Moisturizer, and Special Care
Most clients can cleanse with a gentle, non-active cleanser starting the evening of treatment or the next morning.
If your usual cleanser contains acids, scrubs, or strong actives, pause it for at least 5 days.
Use a simple, soothing moisturizer recommended by your Firefly Spa practitioner.
Avoid products with strong fragrances, retinoids, or exfoliating acids during the initial healing window.
Makeup & Sunscreen
Tinted sunscreen or tinted moisturizer is typically safe after the first day, however for best results use just the moisturizer and sunscreen.
Avoid heavy foundation for at least 48 hours after treatment.
You can usually return to your regular makeup routine after 2–3 days, when your skin appears almost normal again.
Continue using a high-factor sunscreen and any topical products specifically recommended by your practitioner to protect your results.
Activity Restrictions
Plan to stay indoors or avoid strong sun exposure for 1–2 days.
Avoid sweating, hot yoga, and intense workouts for 48 hours.
Skip exfoliants for at least 48 hours and retinoids for at least 5 days.
This helps your skin heal smoothly without unnecessary irritation.
When You’ll See Results
Microneedling results build gradually as your skin creates new collagen.
Many clients notice an early glow, followed by deeper changes over time.
After the First Treatment
After your first microneedling appointment at Firefly Spa, you may notice:
- Brighter skin
- Smoother texture
- Smaller-looking pores
- Mild softening of fine lines
These early improvements often appear within days to a couple of weeks after treatment.
Long-Term Results
Collagen continues to build for 3–6 months after treatment.
For deeper concerns, most clients need 3–6 treatments, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
Maintenance sessions once or twice per year help preserve results as collagen naturally declines with age.
Who Needs Multiple Treatments?
A series of microneedling sessions is recommended for clients with:
- Acne scarring
- Stretch marks
- Deeper wrinkles
- Uneven texture
- Enlarged pores
- Skin laxity
- Sun spots
Ongoing treatments help maintain firmness and clarity as your skin continues to age and collagen naturally decreases.
Microneedling vs Botox and Fillers
Clients often ask whether Botox or fillers are better than microneedling.
The answer depends on your goals and preferences.
Microneedling stimulates your own collagen to soften lines and improve texture.
The advantage is that results are long-lasting and look very natural.
You are not adding volume with synthetic material; your skin is rebuilding itself.
Fillers like Restylane or Perlane, based on cross-linked hyaluronic acid, can be effective but are often expensive.
They are metabolized by the body and must be re-injected every few months to maintain results.
Microneedling is a relatively affordable method with results that can last 8 months or longer, although not permanently.
Aging continues, and lines will eventually re-form, which is why maintenance is recommended.
For many clients, microneedling becomes a foundational treatment.
Botox or fillers can still be used strategically, but microneedling supports overall skin quality and resilience.
