Feel Good All Day Long with Massage After Care

There’s nothing like the feeling you get during a massage. Tension melts away, muscle knots loosen, and waves of relaxation wash over your body as it gets the TLC it needs and deserves. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. While it’s tempting to just lay on the massage table for hours on end to soak up the good vibes, you eventually have to get back out into the real world. You can, however, make the magic of a massage last longer when you take the right after-care steps.

Try incorporating these tips post-massage to get the most out of your treatment:

Drink Water

Hydration is essential for easing any muscle soreness and helping flush toxins and waste from the body post-massage. Add citrus or cucumber slices for a dash of flavor. On the flip side, skip caffeinated drinks like tea and coffee because they have a dehydrating effect on your body.

Stay Mellow

Schedule your massage so you have free time afterwards. It’s jarring to jump from the soothing atmosphere of a treatment room back into a hectic office or stressful commute. Go home and unwind, play soft music, and avoid strenuous exercise.

Stretch Your Muscles

This is a great way to introduce gentle movement back into your day after a massage. It may also prevent muscle soreness, especially if you’ve had a deep tissue massage. Stretches or easy yoga poses enhance that terrific sensation of stress relief you get with a massage; you can also incorporate some guided meditation if you want to prolong that blissful state of mind.

Take a Bath

A warm (not hot) soak in the tub is the perfect complement to a massage. It promotes continued relaxation and muscle relief, and it boosts your circulation. I love adding Epsom salts to a bath after a massage. These bath crystals are made from hydrated magnesium sulfate, which is a natural kind of muscle relaxant. Plus, Epsom salts come in a variety of scents, such as lavender and eucalyptus, so you can add an element of aromatherapy to your bath. Light a couple of candles, put on your favorite podcast or audiobook, and soak up some quality “me” time.

Plan a Light Meal

It’s normal to be hungry after a massage, but resist the temptation to go out and eat a big meal. You’ll feel heavy, bloated, and tired—basically the opposite of how you should feel after your treatment. Feed your hunger with some light and healthy snacks, like cut-up fruit, a handful of nuts, and some fresh veggie sticks.
