Firefly’s Fifth Anniversary of Rejuvenating the Mind, Body, and Spirit

Founded by licensed esthetician and massage therapist Karen Hutchins, Firefly is a beacon of tranquility and rejuvenation in the heart of the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego. Throughout the years, Hutchins has honed a holistic approach to beauty and self-care while staying at the forefront of wellness trends.

“This five-year milestone is very special to me,” Hutchins said. “Like most small businesses, we were hit hard by COVID-19. But we didn’t just survive — we flourished, and that’s in large part because we have a fantastic clientele that supported us. They inspire us every day to provide the best spa services in an inviting environment where our clients can relax and know they’ll be well taken care of.”

Hutchins opened Firefly in 2018, after working out of a private studio in North Park for 18 years. The spa was an immediate draw for the Mission Hills community, and she soon added her first employees — skilled massage therapists and a talented esthetician. This expansion allowed the spa to cater to a wider range of clients while maintaining its commitment to quality and client satisfaction.

Firefly’s resilience was tested during the challenging times of the pandemic, but Hutchins rose to the challenge with innovative adaptation. She offered home-based treatments, bringing relaxation and healing to clients’ backyards. Loyal members continued to pay for their monthly services to help keep Firefly afloat. For her part, Hutchins launched a fund to help local teachers and nurses access spa services to relieve the stress and pressure of working through the pandemic. Through it all, Firefly ensured the safety of clients and staff by maintaining rigorous COVID-19 protocols. This dedication to health and well-being, alongside a commitment to client comfort, paved the way for the spa’s resurgence.

In 2021, Firefly extended its services to include spray tanning. This year, Hutchins proudly introduced lash extensions and an expanded line of facial and skincare treatments. Clients can now indulge in gemstone facials, paraffin hand and foot treatments, CELLUMA facials, and dermaplaning, among other services on the wide-ranging treatment menu. 

Currently, Firefly boasts a skilled team of 12 massage therapists, three estheticians, and a three-member front desk staff to facilitate seamless scheduling. The spa’s storefront boutique enhances the experience, offering a curated selection of cards, candles, journals, skincare products, jewelry, yoga accessories, CBD gummies, topicals, and aromatherapy items.
