Why You Need to Clean Your Face Every Night

No matter how late it is, no matter how tired you are, no matter how hectic your schedule is, you have no excuse for sleeping in your makeup. Skipping your nightly cleansing can have short- and long-term effects that take away from the beauty of your natural complexion. It only takes a minute to wash your face—but that minute can make a big difference in how good your skin looks and feels!

Here are a few reasons why you need to take your makeup off before you go to bed. Ready, set, refresh:

1. Your Skin Is More Likely to Break Out

Sunscreen, concealers, heavy foundation, and similar products can easily clog your pores. This can make your skin a breeding ground for the bacteria and excess oil that leads to acne. You may also notice a dullness or uneven texture to your skin with the buildup of dead skin cells and pimples.

2. Your Complexion Looks Older, No Matter Your Age

Throughout the day, your face is exposed to environmental pollutants, including free radicals.

These free radicals cause oxidative stress that hastens the aging process in the form of premature wrinkles and dark spots on your complexion. Cleansing your skin is a reset, removing impurities while getting your complexion ready for skin-soothing treatments like serums and moisturizers that nourish and revive overnight.

3. You Can Suffer Irritation and Allergies

Do you wake up with red, flaky, itchy, or dry skin after sleeping in your makeup? It could be that your complexion is irritated and inflamed, or even has an allergic reaction (especially if your makeup uses strong chemicals).

4. Your Eyelashes Aren’t As Healthy

This one is more skin-adjacent, but it still has a noticeable effect. Mascara left on overnight can turn brittle and clump, and it can weaken lashes and make them more prone to breakage. (Plus, mascara can be irritating, and you may wake up with red, swollen, or irritated eyes. Make sure to use a makeup remover to swipe off all your mascara before bedtime. (Or skip the mascara entirely and get our lash extensions!)

5. Your Complexion Can’t Recharge

Sleep renews your body and your mind—and your complexion, too! Cellular renewal happens overnight, and makeup interferes with this process. Plus, wearing makeup at night means you can’t put on skincare products that do support cellular renewal, like retinoids.

Cleansing your face is so simple, you could practically do it in your sleep! So take that minute to treat yourself to some TLC right before bedtime; in fact, it can be a soothing ritual that helps you wind down and get ready for a good night’s sleep.
