Celebrating Women’s History Month: An Interview with Firefly’s Founder
March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the achievements of women who have shaped industries, communities, and history itself. At Firefly Spa, we are proud to be a woman-owned business that fosters self-care, wellness, and empowerment. This month, we sat down with our founder, Karen, to learn more about her journey, the evolution of Firefly, and her insights on being a female entrepreneur in the spa industry.
A Journey from Practitioner to Entrepreneur
Karen’s career in the wellness industry began in 2000 when she started working at her first job as an esthetician at a hotel spa. Inspired by the massage therapists she worked alongside, she pursued her massage license as well and soon became dual licensed for massage and skincare. Over the years, she gained experience in various environments – gyms, acupuncture offices, house calls, and even chair massages at Chargers football games. Eventually, she built a strong client base of her own, allowing her to open her own private practice before expanding into our current location in Mission Hills in 2018.
The Inspiration Behind Firefly
Her personal struggles with skincare led her to esthetics, while her background as a software trainer made her realize the physical toll desk jobs take on the body—fueling her passion for massage therapy. Firefly Spa was born out of a desire to help more people with their wellness needs. The name “Firefly” was chosen for its connection to nature and, fun fact, was inspired by the TV show Firefly by Joss Whedon!
Overcoming Challenges as a Woman in Business
Starting a business came with its hurdles, particularly in navigating real estate and construction, industries dominated by men. “I often felt unheard,” Karen recalls. Then, of course, there was the challenge of COVID-19, which tested the resilience of small businesses everywhere.
The Evolution of Firefly Spa
Since opening, Firefly has grown from offering basic facials and massages to a diverse range of services, including lash and brow treatments, enhanced skincare options, and a boutique featuring curated wellness products. The spa has also expanded its team, now utilizing all four treatment rooms and employing front desk staff to enhance the client experience.
Philosophy on Self-Care & Community Impact
Self-care, according to Karen, is about balance, consistency, and self-compassion. Firefly promotes holistic wellness not just within the spa but throughout the community by supporting local businesses, participating in charity events, and donating to silent auctions and schools.
Women in the Spa Industry & Advice for Future Entrepreneurs
Women have always been central to the spa industry, but Karen has seen a shift in recent years—more women are stepping into leadership and ownership roles, driving innovation and expanding the industry’s focus beyond beauty to include holistic health and mental well-being. Her advice to aspiring female entrepreneurs? “Stay persistent, believe in your vision, and build a strong support network.”
Looking Ahead
As Firefly continues to grow, the goal is to expand into a larger space to accommodate more clients and introduce additional amenities.
The Meaning of Women’s History Month
For Karen, Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on the contributions of women throughout history and to celebrate resilience, innovation, and leadership. “As a business owner, it’s a reminder to foster inclusivity, support women in leadership, and create opportunities for growth.”
This month and every month, Firefly Spa is honored to be part of a community that uplifts and empowers women. Join us in celebrating Women’s History Month by prioritizing your self-care, supporting women-owned businesses, and recognizing the incredible women in your life!
